Towing Tool: Selection And Operation of Adjustable Towing Arms

The trailer arm is the core component connecting the towing vehicle with trailer equipment such as RVs, yachts, and flatbed trucks. The advent of adjustable trailer arms allows the same vehicle to accommodate trailer equipment of different heights, solving the pain point of fixed trailer arms that "one arm cannot fit a hundred vehicles".

Adjustable Towing Arms

The core value of adjustable tow arm

It is optimal for the tractor and trailer equipment to be level. If the trailer ball head is too high, the trailer equipment will tilt forward, causing a "lift-up" phenomenon during driving, and the rear wheel's traction will decrease. If the ball head is too low, the trailer equipment will tilt backward, putting excessive pressure on the front wheels and causing the steering to become sluggish. The adjustable trailer arm can be used to change the height of the ball head, ensuring that every connection achieves the ideal posture.

Structural composition and type

Multi-hole mechanical type: The arm body is equipped with 5-9 adjustment holes. The height can be adjusted by pulling out the positioning pin, moving the ball head seat up and down, and reinserting the pin shaft. This is the most common and reliable type, with an adjustment range typically ranging from 15-25 centimeters.

Hydraulic lifting type: Equipped with a built-in hydraulic cylinder, it is driven to lift and lower by a hand pump or electric pump, offering more effortless and precise adjustment. However, its structure is complex and the price is higher, making it suitable for heavy-duty trailers.

Key points of selection

Bearing capacity: Selected based on the total weight of the trailer, with common specifications including 3.5 tons, 5 tons, and 7 tons. It is essential to leave a margin of more than 20%

Arm body material: forged alloy steel or high-strength cast iron, with surface treated by powder coating or hot-dip galvanizing for rust prevention

Ball head specification: US standard, commonly used 2-inch size, requires compatibility with trailer equipment couplers

Insertion square port size: standard is 2 inches, and some heavy-duty versions are 2.5 inches or 3 inches

Installation steps

Step 1: Clean the square opening of the towbar at the rear of the tractor to remove rust and foreign objects. Check the inner wall of the square opening for any deformation or cracks.

Step 2: Push the insertion end of the adjustable tow arm completely into the square opening and align with the positioning hole. Insert the high-strength positioning pin and secure it with an R-shaped circlip or split pin to prevent it from falling off due to vibration.

Step 3: Adjust the position of the ball head according to the height of the towed equipment above the ground. Measure the height of the coupler of the towed equipment above the ground, and adjust the trailer arm based on this measurement. Pull out the adjustment pin on the arm body, move the ball head seat up and down to the appropriate position, re-insert the pin shaft, and lock it tightly.

Step 4: Confirm that the ball head is facing up, and tighten the ball head nut to the specified torque.

Connect the trailer equipment

Reverse the trailer equipment to the position directly above the ball head, aligning the coupler with the ball head. Lower the coupler latch so that it completely wraps around the ball head, and a "click" sound indicates that it is locked in place. Press down on the locking handle and insert the safety pin.

Connecting safety chains: Two safety chains should be crossed and hung on the towbar of the tractor-trailer, forming an "X" shape. The purpose of crossing is that when the trailer accidentally detaches, the safety chains can catch the coupler like a net, preventing the trailer arm from smashing directly to the ground. The chain length needs to have a moderate margin, as being too tight can restrict turning.

Connect the lighting harness: Plug the 7-pin or 13-pin plug of the trailer equipment into the socket of the tractor, and test whether the turn signals, brake lights, and clearance lights are working properly.

Driving essentials in the towed state

Before starting, ensure that the tow arm locating pin, ball head latch, safety chain, and lights are all in place. Engage the D gear and slowly start, feeling the following state of the towing equipment. If there is obvious up-and-down shaking, it indicates that the ball head height is not matched and needs to be adjusted again.

Maintain a safe distance of at least three times the length of the vehicle in front while driving, and apply brakes five times the distance ahead. When turning, increase the radius and constantly observe the trajectory of the towed equipment through the rearview mirror. When reversing, the directional control is opposite to driving alone - if you want the towed equipment to turn left, turn the steering wheel to the right.

Conclusion

The adjustable trailer arm turns the ideal of "one vehicle adapting to multiple trailers" into reality. Proper adjustment, standardized connection, and regular maintenance are all indispensable. When the RV or yacht follows steadily behind, the calmness and peace of mind are the best proof of the value of this towing tool.
