Off Road Trailer: Redefining The Boundaries of Long-distance Travel

During long-distance travel, space always runs out before power. When you find that tents, sleeping bags, air cushions, stoves, tables, chairs, food supplies, tools, spare tires, oil drums are all piled up in the trunk, and even the passenger's feet are stuffed with backpacks, you will start to seriously consider the significance of off-road trailers. It's not just a cargo hopper with a few more wheels, it's a way to maintain dignity and composure in the wilderness.

How to choose an off-road trailer depends on the chassis and suspension. The flatbed trailer has a simple structure, flexible use, and can pull motorcycles, carry supplies, and serve as a base for camping tables. The frame welded with high-strength steel pipes is the foundation, with a wall thickness of no less than 3 millimeters for square pipes and a spacing of no more than 60 centimeters between crossbeams, in order to achieve good overall integrity on intersecting road surfaces. A closed camping trailer is heavier, but it integrates beds and storage compartments inside. When you arrive at the campsite, setting up a sunshade is like moving a bedroom, saving time and effort in setting up and dismantling tents.

Suspension is the key factor in determining whether the trailer follows the trajectory of the main vehicle. Rubber torsion shafts use the elasticity of rubber rods to absorb bumps, are maintenance free, silent, compact in structure, and suitable for most light to medium weight crossings. Steel plate springs are more recommended for heavy loads or extreme terrain, with strong load-bearing capacity. Although regular lubrication is required, their reliability has been verified for a long time. The axle must be a low-cost axle that runs through the left and right, with segmented welding. The weld seam is the weak point, and the risk of bumpy fracture is not worth the risk.

Tires should be of the same specifications as the main vehicle, with AT or MT tires being given priority consideration. The greatest value of the same specifications lies in the universal use of spare tires, reducing the need for a spare tire during long-distance travel and saving dozens of liters of space in the trunk. The sidewall of road tires is too thin, and rocks can easily break when rubbed, making them unsuitable for towing on unpaved roads. It is best to integrate the spare tire rack at the front of the trailer, near the tow bar, so as to balance the distribution of the center of gravity and facilitate access.

The braking system is an underestimated key. Trailers with a total weight exceeding 750 kilograms are required by law to be equipped with brakes. Inertial braking is the most common choice, and the trailer automatically responds when it feels thrust. It does not require any circuit modifications from the main vehicle and can be used immediately after being attached. The pushing sensation of a heavy trailer without brakes on long slopes is not driving pleasure, but a safety hazard.

The cargo compartment is not about the volume number, but about the convenience of retrieval and storage. A shallow and wide cargo compartment is more practical, making all items clear at a glance and easily accessible. Although the deep and narrow cargo compartment has a larger capacity, the items at the bottom need to be bent down to reach out, resulting in low practical efficiency. The bottom plate with drainage holes is a bonus point, and the accumulated water will automatically flow away after water or rain. At least six anchor points should be evenly distributed on both sides of the cargo compartment, and with the help of ratchet straps, any shape of cargo can be securely fixed.

The connection system is the link between the main vehicle and the trailer. The coupler must match the ball head size, with 2 inches being the mainstream specification. The length of the safety chain should be flexible - when turning, the chain should not be tightened at all, too short should limit the turning angle, and too long should cause wear on the ground. The safety chain is cross hung, which can catch the towing rod in case the coupler falls off and prevent it from directly hitting the ground. The load-bearing capacity of the trailer arm should be higher than the total weight of the trailer. The aluminum alloy arm is lightweight and suitable for frequent disassembly and assembly, while the carbon steel arm is heavy but has stronger impact resistance.

It is recommended to choose a seven pin specification for the lighting harness, which provides more reverse light signals and auxiliary power than four pins, and has better scalability. LED light sets are more durable and responsive than traditional light bulbs, with a small price difference but worth upgrading. Brake lights, turn signals, and clearance lights should be tested before each departure. Malfunctioning lights may result in fines for road inspection, and the key is that the car behind cannot see your intention clearly.

The usage habits determine the lifespan of the trailer. Check the axle oil seal and wheel hub for water ingress after wading through water, and promptly address the issue. Tire pressure is checked monthly, and when the trailer load is high, the tire pressure should be higher than that of the main vehicle. The welding seams of the frame are inspected annually, and any rust is promptly polished and repainted. When not in use for a long time, lift the wheels off the ground to prevent tire aging and deformation.

Off road trailers are a key upgrade that transforms long-distance travel from "walkable" to "comfortable". When not in use, it is a piece of iron in the corner of the wall, but when used, it is the most reliable companion in the wilderness. When others are still moving stones to cushion tires, you have already set up tables and chairs and started cooking tea, which is the calmness brought by the trailer.
