The total weight of the off-road trailer, including its own weight and the materials loaded, often ranges from 500 kilograms to 1.5 tons. If such a heavy trailer gets stuck in sand, mud, or a ditch, it cannot be moved by human effort, and attempting to pull it with the main vehicle might deform its chassis. The core function of the off-road snatch block is twofold: to change the direction of traction and to multiply the pulling force. When the main vehicle cannot align the trailer straightly, the pulley can be fixed on a tree or rock on the side. The winch cable or trailer strap can be turned through the pulley, allowing force to be applied from any angle for traction. When the winch pulling force of the main vehicle is insufficient to tow a fully loaded trailer, the pulling force can be multiplied through a movable pulley system - theoretically, a single movable pulley can double the pulling force, and a combination of two pulleys can achieve a threefold increase.

The pulley used for off-road trailer rescue should have a rated working load of no less than 4 tons. The trailer itself may weigh only 1 ton, but when stuck in mud, the resistance it faces could be three to five times its own weight, necessitating a sufficient margin.

There are primarily two types of pulley structures: stamped pulleys and forged pulleys. Stamped pulleys are formed by stamping steel plates and then riveting them together, which makes them lightweight and cost-effective, suitable for occasional light rescue operations. Forged pulleys are integrally forged, providing higher strength and durability, making them ideal for high-frequency or heavy-duty rescue operations. When selecting, ensure that the pulley side plates can be opened and closed, otherwise it will be impossible to install them without cutting the cable.

The interior of a pulley must have bearings. Pulleys with ball bearings rotate smoothly, with minimal friction loss, and the cable wears out more slowly. Pulleys without bearings (with only copper sleeves or direct friction) have difficulty rotating under heavy loads, greatly reducing the actual tension gain.

The operation of changing direction with a single pulley is the simplest. Secure the pulley to a lateral anchor point (such as a large tree, rock, or ground anchor) using a shackle. Open the pulley side plate, insert the winch cable or trailer strap into the rope slot, and close the side plate to lock it. When the main vehicle applies force, the direction of the pulling force is changed by the pulley, but the magnitude of the force remains unchanged. This method is suitable for situations where the main vehicle cannot approach the trailer in a straight line.

The single pulley system for force multiplication is a more commonly used rescue configuration. The pulley is fixed at the remote anchor point (a large tree or another stable vehicle), and the winch cable is led out from the main vehicle's winch, passes through the pulley, and then returns to connect to the towing hook of the trailer. At this point, the pulling force applied by the main vehicle's winch is amplified by the movable pulley, and the pulling force borne by the trailer is approximately twice the nominal pulling force of the winch (neglecting friction loss). The key point is that the pulley must be fixed at the remote anchor point, rather than on the trailer. If it is fixed on the trailer, the multiplying effect will be lost.

Double pulley triple force configuration

In extreme vehicle sinking situations, where a single pulley multiplication is still insufficient to extricate the vehicle, a dual pulley system can be employed. The two pulleys are respectively fixed to the remote anchor point and the trailer. The winch cable is extended from the main vehicle's winch, passes through the pulley on the trailer, then the pulley on the remote anchor point, and finally returns to secure the main vehicle itself. This configuration theoretically provides three times the pulling force, but the cable winding speed is also reduced to one-third accordingly. The operation needs to be slower and more cautious, as the tension borne by each connection point increases exponentially, and the strength of the anchor points requires additional confirmation.

The towing point of an off-road trailer is typically located at the frame's front end, near the main beam, which is lower and more inward than the tow hook of a regular passenger car. Before using a pulley rescue, it is important to confirm the integrity of the towing point structure of the trailer, checking for any rust or deformation. The trailer frame is usually welded from steel pipes, and prolonged off-road use may lead to fatigue cracks. Before applying force, carefully inspect the weld seams with a flashlight.

The weight distribution of the trailer affects the difficulty of rescue. If the supplies are concentrated at the front of the trailer (near the tow bar), the front of the vehicle will sink more, and the wheels will sink deeper. Before rescue, some heavy objects on the trailer can be transferred to the main vehicle to reduce the weight of the trailer before applying force. If the trailer is stuck on a slope, it is preferable to choose downhill traction and use gravity assistance.

The pulley system amplifies both the force and the risk. The rated load of all connecting components (shackles, tree straps, cables) must exceed the maximum tensile force of the system. When the pulley is under stress, the fan-shaped areas on both sides are also dangerous zones, and everyone must evacuate. Cover the cable with a damping bag to prevent rebound after breakage. During the application of force, continuously observe the operation of the pulley. If there is any abnormal noise or jamming, stop immediately.

Maintenance

After each use, clean the sediment from the pulley groove, check the side plate for deformation, and ensure the bearing rotates smoothly. Since the pulley is exposed to the harsh off-road environment, salt and moisture can corrode the bearing. Apply anti-rust oil after use. If the rivets are loose or the side plate is deformed, discard it immediately.
